[Kira sits under the camera, grinning a bit in expectation. She takes a deep breath as she looks around, and then addresses her audience, such as it is.]

Okay, so after getting settled in the first thing I did was go up on the deck. It's funny how you see movies and look at pictures in books, but it's totally true that nothing can prepare you for how vast space actually is. It seems like people have two reactions to it, either they're completely overwhelmed by it, like in a bad 'I can't take this' way, or they think it's amazing.

[She leans forward earnestly.]

It's amaaaaazing!

[She bounces in her chair, though gradually she slows down, and settles into a more serious expression.]

I haven't been assigned an inmate yet, and to be honest, I'm nervous. I mean, I'm supposed to help them, right? But what if I can't? What if they don't want to be helped? What if I have to - I don't know, I'm not particularly mean or anything. But what if I have to be?

[Her mouth scrunches up a little.]

I'll figure this out. I have to.

[Maybe indicating she has doubts or worries about her performance as a warden is a mistake, but well, live and learn, little kitsune.]

[She ahh's.] Makes sense. Are you familiar with the plants from Earth commonly associated with a country called Japan? Most people usually think initially of cherry blossom and bansai trees.

We have both of those.

[whatthefoxsay]

[Kira lights up a little.] I'm crap with bonsai, but I love the smell of cherry blossoms. I hope you don't mind visitors.

[godsays]

The garden is always open.

I'm not always there. But it's always open.

Then you may be seeing me, if I end up arriving during your shift. Are there any seating areas or open spaces in the garden, or is it all designed for efficiency and function? If you don't mind my asking.

...why would it be designed for efficiency? It's here to be beautiful.

[whatthefoxsay]

Well, on Earth a lot of gardens either plotted for either aesthetic purposes - to be beautiful, or to provide food - for efficiency purposes. I would have thought on board the Barge emphasis would be placed on food production. But then again, the idea that one has to choose between beauty and function is a very Earth ideal, and may not be correct at all.

[godsays]

Oh. No, the Admiral brings in the food, mostly. There are the chickens.

We're not self-sustaining?

[She seems surprised about that.]

[godsays]

No.

[whatthefoxsay]

Why not?

[godsays]

If the plants fed us, and the Admiral gave us nothing - where would the sunlight come from, for them to grow? Where would the water come from?

[whatthefoxsay]

I'm not saying the Admiral wouldn't be responsible for some food...but hydroponics are a thing, as are solar cells and recyclable water systems.

[godsays]

We can't raise animals for meat. We don't have the space or the time to make this place into a farm that can feed a hundred people.

[whatthefoxsay]

[She holds up her hands in surrender.]

Okay.

[Seriously, no skin off her nose.]

[godsays]

I don't know how any of that would work, anyway.

I didn't know what showers were when I got here.

[whatthefoxsay]

[Her eyes go wide, and then she looks confused.]

If you don't know how it works, why do you assume it wouldn't?

[godsays]

How do you know the Admiral doesn't have it running self-sufficiently with technology you don't understand?

[whatthefoxsay]

If it was self-sufficient we'd be doing it ourselves.

[A sudden grin.] I think you like to argue just for the sake of arguing.

[godsays]

[ Just a hint of a smile. She might have hit the nail on the head, there. ]

It's how I figure things out.
